Sludge Demands a Tough Pump

Wastewater sludge is a challenging material to pump because it is thick, viscous, and often contains solids that can cause clogs and wear the pump. Sludge pumps are designed to handle these challenges and are typically made of abrasion-resistant materials that can withstand the abrasive and corrosive nature of sludge.
A Virginia wastewater treatment plant had Gorman Rupp 10-Series pumps that were originally installed in 1996. They performed extremely well; however, the customer recently renovated their process and upgraded the 10-Series pumps to the latest Gorman Rupp Technology, Super T-Series pumps, fitted with hardened ductile iron wear parts. The Super T-Series pump is a centrifugal pump that is specifically designed and built to handle the challenges of this demanding material. Here are some things to consider when selecting a replacement sludge pump:
- Ability to Pump Thick Sludge
- Materials of Construction and Abrasion Resistance
- Ease of Maintenance and Service
- Availability of Spare Parts
- Initial Cost and Cost of Spare Parts
- Ability to Pump Solids without Clogging
- Easy to Unclog
