Reliable Utility Water Systems by Gorman-Rupp

Gorman-Rupp offers an innovative and cost-effective solution for utility water systems in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with its above-ground, self-priming pump design. Unlike traditional below-grade systems that require flooded-suction, Gorman-Rupp’s above-ground pumps simplify installation, reducing construction costs, and provide safe, easy access for maintenance and inspection.
Proven Performance in the Field
A recent example is Envirep’s installation of a Gorman-Rupp utility water system at a Maryland WWTP, where the design provides reliable and efficient water distribution throughout the facility. The system utilizes Gorman-Rupp Model 04A20-B self-priming centrifugal pumps to draw treated effluent water from the plant’s final effluent channel. This water is then pressurized and distributed to yard hydrants, spray water, headworks screens, foam control, and odor control systems.
Driven by a variable frequency drive (VFD), the system delivers up to 1,200 gallons per minute (GPM) at a consistent 125 PSI, automatically adjusting to fluctuating demand across the plant. This installation was part of a larger upgrade project to meet Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) standards, supporting the plant’s environmental performance and reliability goals.
Complete, Factory-Assembled System Packages

Each Gorman-Rupp utility water system is a complete, factory-assembled package. Systems include:
- Pumps and motors mounted on a common steel base
- Discharge header piping and isolation valves
- Pre-wired control panel with UL label
- Optional hydro-pneumatic tank and VFDs for optimized performance
Advanced Controls and System Features
The UL-labeled stainless steel control panel:
- Circuit breakers
- Allen Bradley VFDs
- Programmable logic controller (PLC)
- Elapsed time meters
- Indicator lights for system status
- Discharge pressure sensor
- Alarm functions for critical conditions
For systems needing additional protection, manual or automatic filters can be added to prevent debris from damaging downstream equipment.
Engineered for Reliability and Simplicity
Gorman-Rupp’s above-ground utility water systems minimize maintenance time, improve operator safety, and extend equipment life. With self-priming pumps that can be serviced in place, plant operators benefit from reduced downtime and simplified maintenance.
